Homeschooling High School definitely has its challenges! I am happy to help you in this. First, I want to encourage you to keep stepping forward in faith and with conviction. You can do this!
I am right there with you as my oldest graduates in May of this year.
It is scary everything feels so “real”. I have doubted myself in so many ways these past few years. But, I have found practical resources and encouragement to help me along the way. It always seems that when I am feeling discouraged I am able to find just the right resource to help keep me going. I hope these links and this short article can be helpful to you as well.
My favorites resources for getting started:
(many are specific to Arizona🌵🏜️)
Super helpful resources for High School parents:
- HSLDA Transcript service (This is a life-saver!! And there is a discount for HSLDA members.)
- AFHE Graduation – this is a well-planned event to celebrate this important milestone. My daughter is looking forward to it! May 2023!! 🎓🎉
Here are some free resources for Homeschooling High School:
- Khan Academy offers free online material including accredited AP classes = https://www.khanacademy.org/
- Article: How to Grade a High School Course (more about rubrics & assignments + eBook)
- HSLDA free transcripts – a variety of downloadable PDFs that you can edit and print out yourself.
- AFHE article: Homeschool Transcripts – More Important Than Ever
Know that you are not alone. There are many levels of support wherever you are on this homeschool journey. The AFHE convention features a high school track (and in 2021 a whole day of special talks). I always walk away with pages of notes, next actions to take, and solid encouragement.
Here are a few of my favorites:
- High School Transcript Clinic – LaNissir James, High School Consultant from HSLDA
- Homeschooling the Whole Teen – Carol Gray
- Help and Hope for the Overwhelmed Mom – Heidi St. John
- High School Testing Simply Explained – Lee Binz
- And here is a link to the Facebook Group created and updated by Kathryn Graunke
- It contains super helpful detailed information specific to Arizona
Homeschooling High School provides so many unique opportunities for our families and our teens. We are able to adjust our schedules to allow for part-time jobs, travel, volunteer work, different classes, and internships. They can learn about the world by experiencing it in a structured way.
Our kids and teens get real-life experiences because we have the time with them. We can teach them skills that they will apply in their adult lives when they are in Jr. High and High School.
Here is a great example:
We can also give our teens time to experiment with subjects and electives they find interesting. What do they care about? What do they enjoy learning? How has God made your child unique and with what gifting?
